Blessed are the meek, For they shall inherit the earth.
Matthew 5:5
To be meek in this world, is to be perceived as timid and vulnerable. It is like a sheep going to battle with a wolf. This would not be considered a fair fight, due to the nature of a wolf as predatory, while a sheep will not fight back or even resist slaughter. The good news for the sheep is that they have a shepherd. So it is, with the meek who can boldly proclaim that The LORD is my shepherd; I shall not want.
Although the world perceives the meek to be weak and vulnerable. The LORD our shepherd has spoken and given the meek an inheritance that predators seek to dominate in the realm of time on earth. Dominion over the earth will ultimately be given to the meek as an inheritance. Strength that is made perfect in weakness will prevail in eternity. Because the word of God that is settled in heaven, will one day be settled on earth. Forever, O LORD, Your word is settled in heaven. [Psalm 119:89]
When the meek are under attack by aggressive people, they must resist the temptation to fight with carnal weapons. The word of God is clear in Romans 12:19-21 — Beloved, do not avenge yourselves, but rather give place to wrath; for it is written, “Vengeance is Mine, I will repay,” says the Lord. Therefore “If your enemy is hungry, feed him; If he is thirsty, give him a drink; For in so doing you will heap coals of fire on his head.” Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good.
The meek are blessed because they give place to wrath, and in so doing, they are not overcome by evil, but rather, they overcome evil with good. We are beyond the time when an eye for an eye, and a tooth for a tooth is considered sound doctrine. How does the meek function in a dog eat dog world? The humility that keeps the meek, is the knowledge of grace at work in their lives. If we are saved by grace, and not of works, then we have received something that we neither earned or deserve. So the ministry of the meek is to impart grace in the same way Jesus taught His disciples in Matthew 10:7-8; And as you go, preach, saying, The kingdom of heaven is at hand.’ Heal the sick, cleanse the lepers, raise the dead, cast out demons. Freely you have received, freely give.
So if you are among the meek. Don’t feel vulnerable, because your shepherd is always near to protect and defend you. Hear the voice of the Shepherd in John 10:27-28 — My sheep hear My voice, and I know them, and they follow Me. And I give them eternal life, and they shall never perish; neither shall anyone snatch them out of My hand. The meek are in strong hands, and you have been given eternal life, so know that you are secure beyond time. Blessed are the meek, For they shall inherit the earth.
