Yet behold, there shall be left in it a remnant who will be brought out, both sons and daughters; surely they will come out to you, and you will see their ways and their doings. Then you will be comforted concerning the disaster that I have brought upon Jerusalem, all that I have brought upon it. And they will comfort you, when you see their ways and their doings; and you shall know that I have done nothing without cause that I have done in it,” says the Lord GOD. Ezekiel 14:22-23
In the midst of calamity and disaster, God has a way of sending comfort for His people. The world is experiencing unprecedented disaster, that seems to persist in ways that baffle the best and brightest scientific minds in every nation. This is made evident by flare ups and waves that re-emerge in places that appeared to have the coronavirus under control. Yet in all of this, God has a remnant who will ultimately arise and bring comfort to His people, as the nations of the world see their ways and their doings.
Sons and daughters suggest that an emerging generation will make up the remnant that the LORD will use to comfort the nations. What is the purpose of the remnant beyond comfort? We find the answer to this question in verse 23 — And they will comfort you, when you see their ways and their doings; and you shall know that I have done nothing without cause that I have done in it,” says the Lord GOD. Everything that God does has a cause that is in accordance with His purpose. Even during times of judgment, God comforts the very people who caused the judgment due to their rebellion and disobedience.
Understanding the cause of an action or event is essential to correction. In disciplines like, Psychology, Psychiatry, Business and all manner of therapy, root cause analysis is a key to breakthrough. In the Kingdom of God, cause is exposed by the Holy Spirit who reveals the things of God to us. For what man knows the things of a man except the spirit of the man which is in him? Even so no one knows the things of God except the Spirit of God. Now we have received, not the spirit of the world, but the Spirit who is from God, that we might know the things that have been freely given to us by God.
1 Corinthians 2:11-12
The Lord GOD wants us to know that nothing He has done in our nation or the world, is done without a cause; and you shall know that I have done nothing without cause that I have done in it,” says the Lord GOD. When one looks at our legal system, a bedrock of our criminal justice system is probable cause. While God offers certainty about His cause, probable cause is good enough in human affairs.
No matter what is going on around us, we can take comfort in the fact that God does nothing without cause. He wants us to know that this is true, so that we don’t get discouraged because of the calamity in the world around us. May the remnant rise up to bring comfort to His people across this land and the world. God does nothing without cause.
